Is Your Packaging Social Media Friendly?…

When you think of social media one of the last things you’d associate it with is Packaging, however brands should be thinking social when it comes to their products packaging.

Packaging is a key marketing tool for any brand or product, we know that packaging is often the first real contact customers have with a product and innovative packaging designs often become the sole reason for a products purchase, particularly seasonally. We know packaging sells but the question is…

Is Your Package Social Media Friendly?

Clever marketing makes use of online platforms such as Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest etc, brands create their own #tags that alongside product become globally recognised. It is so easy to transfer this to packaging, think Coca-Cola’s #ShareACoke with campaign, where they personalised their coke bottles and cans with names. How often did you see images of your connections, sipping from their personalised bottle on your social feeds? All that social exposure, cost the company nothing in advertising , simply just their packaging budget. This thoughtful campaign to personally involve customer’s in their product received a massive 235,000 tweets alone using their #tag.

Social Friendly not Social War…

On the flip of social packaging triumphs, the digital world is also a recipe for disaster if brands get it wrong. Amazon for example had huge complaints several years ago when rightly so, customers took to the world of twitter for a public moan on ridiculous amounts of waste, including pictures of small items packaged in huge boxes with additional cardboard wadding, this was simply a #socialfail.

The Key to Social Success…

The key to social packaging success as proven by the above mentioned Coca-Cola campaign is to keep your packaging engaging, unique and personal with a motivation for customers to capture package shots upload and share on social platforms. Having social worthy packaging can of course come at extra cost but it doesn’t have to be for the big players only.  In fact for smaller brands or one off boutiques, social packaging can be the starting point for exposing the brand to a whole new consumer base and open up their social presence to new followers , pinners and in turn sales.
